Want to deal with your invisible MS Symptoms?
Explaining the invisible symptoms in Multiple Sclerosis to other people, be it friends or family members, could definitely be one of the toughest aspect about daily life with this illness.
I don’t believe I’m exaggerating when I say this. Unless you are showing some sort of physical problem (i.e. walking difficulty, slurred speech) or any of the many symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), all MSers are all too familiar with the phrase “Oh but you look so good!” whenever we meet somebody who we haven’t seen for a while. Only another person with MS (MSer) can really understand how difficult and frustrating living with MS really is. I will try to outline below the most difficult ghost symptoms that MSers have to face every day: MOST DIFFICULT INVISIBLE MS SYMPTOMS
FATIGUE Unless you are falling down every other step you take or falling asleep at the drop of a dime, there is no way to show any body how fatigued you really are. Since everybody gets tired (even exhausted) at times, people that do not have MS cannot even imagine what our fatigue is like. For us (MSers) the fact that we look good but feel like crap can turn into a very stressful situation, which only makes things worse. Of all the invisible symptoms you experience, would you agree with me and say that Fatigue is KING?

VISION PROBLEMSNot only are very common in MS, also they are big time part of the hidden symptoms must MSers have to live with. Remember if you don’t show it, people wouldn’t know it. People do not “see” your struggle or the difficulties you are experiencing. They just see you. Good old looking good you! Meanwhile you could be experiencing: - An attack of Optic Neuritis
- Blurred vision
- Double vision
Almost all vision problems are not noticeable and I have found that women are much better at pretending than men. Don’t have a scientific explanation for that. It is just that all the women that have MS that I know are really fantastic actresses when it comes to pretending everything is alright. I, for one, cannot distinguish well some low color tones and frequently miss the first step on a flight of stairs.
BLADDER AND BOWEL PROBLEMS Your need to use the bathroom with relative urgency (a lot of the time) is another frequent ghost symptom. Here are a couple of tips or how to strategies you might find helpful: - Reduce the amount of fluids you drink if you drink more than 2 quarts (1.89 L) daily
- Reduce or eliminate caffeine-containing drinks, such as coffee, tea, and soda, from your diet
- Do not drink more than one alcoholic drink per day
There is also the Bladder training or bladder retraining strategy. This strategy teaches you to increase the time in-between urinating. First you should setup a avoiding schedule and learn to resist the first urge to urinate and refrain from urinating until the scheduled time. The interval between bathroom visits is slowly increased until you can refrain from going to the bathroom to urinate for several hours. There are several medications that could help you with bladder and or bowel control problems. Do not be embarrassed and talk to your doctor. For uncontrollable bladder contractions that force urine out of the bladder, the following medications may be used - Ditropan
- Ditropan XL
- Tofranil
- Detrol
- Antispas
- Bentyl
- Cytospaz
- Levsin
- Urised
