The MS Society explains why MSers think we’re losing our minds

WHEN WE'RE AS SMART AS EVER!

I have found that the National MS Society has recently touched on one of the most frequent and less understood problems faced by many of us living with Multiple Sclerosis: Cognition difficulties.

This is really one of those invisible ms symptoms that those of us living with MS have to deal with each and every day of our lives but very few people really know anything about it. The MS Society managed to present this issue in the most fantastic way I know off. A 2 part VIDEO PRESENTATION PROGRAM

I really think that the explanations and examples provided on my Cognition & MS page will definitely help you better understand what’s happening to you and clarify that YOU ARE NOT LOSING YOUR MIND! But, explaining it to anyone close to you, like your spouse or any other close person, really is a different story.

To help your love ones grasp the concept of what we have to deal with only by reading thru the same material will only give them an idea of what is happening.

I am afraid that I don’t believe that just reading about the Cognition difficulties that we, as MSers, have to deal with each and every day is not enough to help them understand what we are really going thru.

Reading would not really get the entire story as me and you would like them to learn about it so, with that in mind I set out to try and get the best material produced and published by the National MS Society on the subject of Cognition problems faced on a daily basis by the millions of folks living and coping with Multiple Sclerosis.

I found a two part video series called “Hold that thought: Cognition and MS” which I believe will help mostly your loved ones and close family members gain a better understanding of what are the type of challenges that most (if not all) MSers have to deal with every day regarding our mental sharpness, memory lost and other cognitive functions that most people take for granted.

Click on the following link to watch the first part of a 2 part video by the National MS Society that shows what happens in the cognitive aspects and functions in a person that have multiple sclerosis

The best news I got after watching the first part of the National MS Society video “Hold that thought: Cognition and MS” is a clear understanding of what is happening to all of us (MSers) and it is also very clear to me now that MS does not make any of us less intelligent at all.

MS only makes us feel that way. In reality, all that is happening Is that the rate in which we process all the information that we are constantly grabbing from the world around us is much slower than before we had MS.

Cool hats are fantastics  Hi, thanks a lot for this very informative website. It has been of great help and assistance to me and my family.

Here is my grain of salt to contribute ...

During the 1st. part of this 2 part video series it is quite clear that Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can have a direct impact on our perception of our own intelligence and that is all a perception. The reality is that although MS has an effect on many cognitive functions such as:

  • Challenges with memory and information processing
  • Difficulties with multi tasking
  • Problems with sudden task switching
  • Visual spatial type of problems (Where things are in relation with each other) and
  • Trouble performing Executive functions like:

    • Planning
    • Sequencing
    • Problem solving

In the First part of “Hold that thought: Cognition and MS” we all learned what are some of the most common problems that up to 70% of MSers have some sort of cognitive issue with. I now invite you to watch part No. 2 of the “Hold that thought: Cognition and MS” video series.

Where you will learn some tricks and strategies to better manage the:

  • MEMORY STUMBLE SITUATIONS
  • THE CONSTANT LOSING FOCUS BIT
  • FREQUENTLY GETTING LOST
  • HAVING TROUBLE REMEMBERING THINGS

One final note for you all is that we must not neglect this issue if we do not want it to interfere with our lives and create more STRESS ON YOUR RELATIONSHIPS AND SELF IMAGE. Remember, you are as intelligent as ever. It is a matter of how we feel now that we have MS and how we perceive ourselves and think how others perceive us. That is a totally different story.
